Overview

Why Motor Insurance Matters

In India, holding valid motor insurance is a legal requirement for every registered vehicle. Beyond compliance, it protects you financially against accidents, theft, fire, natural calamities and third-party liabilities.

There are two main types of motor insurance β€” Third Party (Liability Only), which is mandatory and covers damage you cause to others, and Comprehensive, which covers third-party liability plus your own vehicle's damage. Under IRDAI rules, third-party premiums are broadly standardised across insurers, while comprehensive premiums vary based on the vehicle, add-ons and your claim history.

⚠️
Insurance Disclaimer: Insurance is a subject matter of solicitation. Benefits, exclusions, waiting periods, premiums and claim acceptance are subject to insurer underwriting and policy terms. Premiums shown are indicative reference figures, excluding GST (18% applicable as per current rules), and may change as per IRDAI notifications β€” confirm current rates with the insurer.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is vehicle insurance mandatory in India?
Yes. Under the Motor Vehicles Act, at least third-party insurance is legally mandatory for every vehicle driven on Indian roads. Comprehensive insurance is optional but strongly recommended as it also covers your own vehicle.
What's the difference between third-party and comprehensive insurance?
Third-party insurance covers injury, death or property damage caused to others and is legally mandatory. Comprehensive covers third-party liability plus your own vehicle's damage from accident, theft, fire and natural calamities, and supports add-ons like zero depreciation.
Should I buy zero depreciation cover?
For newer vehicles (typically up to about 5 years), zero depreciation is recommended because the insurer does not deduct depreciation on parts during a claim, so you get a higher payout. The premium is slightly higher. Confirm terms with the insurer.
What is No Claim Bonus (NCB)?
NCB is a discount on your renewal premium for every claim-free year. It can accumulate over consecutive years and is generally transferable when you change your vehicle or insurer, subject to conditions.
Can I insure trucks, buses and e-rickshaws?
Yes. Commercial vehicles including trucks, pickups, buses, autos and e-rickshaws can be insured on a third-party or comprehensive basis. Premiums depend on gross vehicle weight, seating capacity, permit type and usage.
Are the premiums shown here final?
No. The figures shown are indicative reference premiums and can change with IRDAI notifications and your vehicle's specifics. Your actual premium depends on the vehicle, location, add-ons and claim history. We'll get you an accurate quote.
